Tamil Movies Like Salaar: Ponniyin Selvan, 2.0 & More

Director Prashanth Neel has introduced a new universe with his latest release, Salaar. The first part of the film series was recently released in theaters and has received positive reviews from the audience. The Prabhas-led movie narrates the story of two childhood friends who turn enemies and seek revenge. While this genre is standard in Tamil cinema, several superhit movies have emerged based on it. Some of the most well-known films are Ponniyin Selvan, Nayakan, Mahaan, Eega and 2.0.

Ponniyin Selvan

Celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan roared at the box office. The movie series had an ensemble cast, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, and more. The movies are based on the story of the Cholas, a historical dynasty in South India. The film captures the disputes among the Chola empire for the throne. The legendary tale of the Cholas is filled with mind games, politics, battles, and, most importantly, revenge. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s character Nandini seeks revenge on the Chola empire. The film minted a reasonable sum at the box office and received mixed reviews from the audience.

Nayakan

Nayakan is a 1987 classic, starring Kamal Haasan. The film revolves around the story of a young boy named Sakthivel. While he leads an uncomfortable life, he witnesses his father’s brutal murder. Thus, he seeks revenge on the officer who was responsible for his father’s murder and kills him. He then runs away to Mumbai to become a gangster. Saranya Ponvannan, Karthika, Tinnu Anand, and others played supporting roles in this crime action film. Much like Salaar, the movie is based on a plotted revenge. Mani Ratnam helmed this movie, which is still liked by many movie-buffs.

Mahaan

Mahaan is a 2022 Tamil film starring Chiyaan Vikram. The viewers widely praised the film’s music, direction, storyline, and action sequences. Both critics and audiences lauded the film, especially Chiyaan Vikram’s performance. Mahaan followed the story of a school teacher named Gandhi Mahaan. After his family abandons him, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery. As a result, he becomes a billionaire, but his challenges never end. Karthik Subbaraj directed the movie, while Seven Screen Studio produced it. Dhruv Vikram, Vani Bhojan, Simran, Bobby Simha, Sananth, and others played supporting characters.

Eega

Eega, also titled Makkhi, is among the most popular Tamil movies. While the movie was not received well during its theatrical release, it became popular after it came on television. The film had an ensemble cast, another reason for its popularity. Nani, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Sudeep played lead roles in the movie. Adithya, Srinivasa Reddy, Noel Sean, and Thagubothu Ramesh played supporting roles. Eega revolves around Nani and Bindu, who love each other dearly. As a jealous Sudeep kills Nani, the latter is reincarnated as a fly and decides to seek revenge. He makes Sudeep’s life a living hell with the help of Bindu. As a result, Sudeep dies due to an explosion accidentally created by Nani. Much like Salaar, the revenge meter is high in this one.

2.0

2.0 marked the official sequel to Rajinikanth’s hit film Robot. Apart from the Tamil superstar, the movie starred Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson in pivotal roles. The film’s events take place eight years after the first one. As all mobile phones in the city start to fly in the air, Dr Vaseegaran tries to convince the council to let him revive Chitti.

Chitti is revived to fight Pakshi Rajan when things go out of hand. Several people are killed, and an enormous body is formed with mobile phones. Chitti then realizes that Pakshi Rajan is avenging the death of many birds who died from harmful radiation. As a result, Chitti defeats Pakshi Rajan but promotes his values.

In conclusion, Salaar’s revenge theme has been seen in many movies but with unique plots. These Tamil movies are the most popular ones.
