The Suspiria remake gets a new director in Luca Guadagnino
Director David Gordon Green was planning his remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 classic Suspiria as far back as 2008, initially with Natalie Portman in the lead, then Isabelle Fuhrman and Isabelle Huppert, but budgetary as well as rights issues kept it from happening. Now, one of the remake’s original producers, Luca Guadagnino, has told Empire that he will direct the Suspiria remake himself.
“The film by Dario Argento was a very indicative moment of growing up for me because I saw it when I was 14,” said Guadagnino. “I think it changed me forever. I was obsessed [with Argento] through all my adolescence. [My version] is going to be set in Berlin in 1977. Its going to be about the mother and the concept of motherhood and about the uncompromising force of motherhood. Its going to be about finding your inner voice the title is very evocative on these grounds.”
Guadagnino has just attended the Venice Film Festival to premiere his new crime drama A Bigger Splash, starring Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone), Ralph Fiennes (Skyfall) and a silent Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive). Apparently the making of that film was such a pleasure for the director and his cast that HitFix is reporting that they are all planning to reunite on the Suspiria project. Johnson would presumably take the Jessica Harper role of a ballerina who attends a prestigious dance academy only to learn it is a front for a coven of modern-day witches.
Fox Searchlight is set to release A Bigger Splash in limited release on May 13, 2016.
