Colin Trevorrow teases the upcoming Jurassic World sequel
After becoming the third-highest grossing film of all time last month, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment finally announced plans for a Jurassic World sequel. Though the movie won’t hit theaters until 2018, development is already underway with Jurassic Worlds director, Colin Trevorrow, and Derek Connolly currently scripting the film.
Speaking with Wired, Trevorrow offered a tease for the film’s plot, revealing that they’ll likely shy away from the traditional island and theme park setting.
“[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island,” Trevorrow tells the outlet. “Thatll get old real fast….I feel like the idea that this isnt always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponise it and later on we found it could be used for energy. And this isnt something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in this movie, is that might be able to grow in more of these movies if they decide to make more of them, is: What if this went open source? It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?’
“And Dr Wu says in the film, when he’s warning Dr Mesrani, ‘Were not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur’. I think thats an interesting idea that even if we dont explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand. I shouldnt use the word universe, because people will think were making a Jurassic World universe – were not.”
Trevorrow will not return to direct the Jurassic World sequel, which is currently set for release on June 22, 2018. Stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are confirmed to return for the film which will once again see producer Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg leading the team of filmmakers for the next chapter in the franchise.
Playing now in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters, and having grossed over $1.559 billion at the global box office, Jurassic World also Ty Simpkins (Insidious, Iron Man 3), Jake Johnson (Lets Be Cops, New Girl), Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer), Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi, The Amazing Spider-Man), Vincent DOnofrio (Daredevil, Law & Order: Criminal Intent), BD Wong (Jurassic Park, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Intouchables), Judy Greer (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Tomorrowland), Katie McGrath (NBCs Dracula, Merlin), Lauren Lapkus (Blended, The To Do List) and Andy Buckley (Bridesmaids, The Other Guys).
