Formerly The Well, The Last Survivors is the feature directorial debut from Thomas Hammock, whose terrific production design youve seen in the likes of Youre Next and The Guest. Here, Hammock crafts a dry, sand, oil and blood-caked world that centers on a teenage girl fighting to protect the last working well in a drought-stricken land. At the edge of an expansive, dusty valley, all that remains of the Wallace Farm for Wayward Youth are some hollowed-out husks of buildings. Seventeen-year-old Kendal (Haley Lu Richardson of ABC Familys Ravenswood) can barely recall when the Oregon valley was all lush farmland. Its been a decade since the last rainfall, and society at large has dried up and blown away.
Kendal and her boyfriend Dean (Booboo Stewart, X-Men: Days of Future Past) and the few others who remain barely scrape by while dreaming of escape. Dean is ill and can stay alive only by drinking water regularly luckily, he and Kendal have access to a special well with enough water for both of them. But when a greedy water baron lays claim to what little of the precious resource remains underground, Kendal must decide whether to run and hide or bravely fight for the few cherished people and things she has left.
Bravely fight seems to be the only real option, and Richardson gets brutal in this stylish excerpt from the film. I like the contrast of rough terrain, climate and atmosphere with the beauty of it all; almost the sense that J. Crew styled the apocalypse. The Last Survivors is available on VOD and Digital Download from Dark Sky Films this August 4th. The film hits DVD & Blu the same date.
