Last night saw the premiere of MTV’s Scream the TV Series, a new iteration and adaptation of the mid-90s slasher great. And it was largely fun! Attempting a knowing, meta approach at bringing the horror subgenre to TV, the first episode was like wrapping a teen melodrama in masked killer garb. Of course the whole point is now there’s much more to come.
This look at the rest of Scream the TV Series is one the same track. Murder and melodrama; relationship woes, family secrets, romantic entanglement, the mistrusting of friends, some Scooby-Doo’ing about and, is it possible there are two killers? Not long into the trailer, a whole other mask is present, while the new Ghostface goes a bit more traditional with his cloak. Multiple murderers would be in line with the films and a way to keep this show interesting over several Tuesdays in the summer.
Scream the TV Series is back next week. Upcoming episodes are directed by Honeymoon‘s Leigh Janiak and The House of the Devil‘s Ti West. For more, see Shock’s review of the first episode right here.
