Having just hit Blu-ray from William Lustigs invaluable Blue Underground, Larry Cohens utterly mad God Told Me To is on a small theatrical tour, stopping next week at Brooklyns Nitehawk Cinema and featuring a Q&A moderated by Shocks Sam Zimmerman.
On Thursday, March 5th, at 7:30 p.m., Cohens vision of widespread chaos across New York City unspools at Nitehawk with stars Tony Lo Bianco and Randy Jurgensen on hand for a Q&A. In the film, armed with nothing but a cheap mail order rifle, an everyday Joe turns expert sniper, randomly taking out over a dozen New Yorkers. Devout detective Peter Nicholas (Lo Bianco) is on the case and gets shaken to the core when he finds out the killers motive: God told him to do it. As the investigation continues, more and more New Yorkers go on divinely inspired rampages and its up to Detective Nicholas to find out if these people are acting on Gods word, or if this sudden spat of violence has a more terrestrial cause.
Cohen has made some of the great New York City terror films, and its always a treat to see them projected. God Told Me To could be one of the more underrated in his filmography, so if youve never caught on a big screen, or never seen at all, set your sights on Thursday. It should be great.
