International Trailer: Marcus Nispel’s Exeter (aka Backmask)

Marcus Nispel, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and Friday the 13th (2009) has long completed his rock ‘n’ roll exorcism film, Exeter (aka Backmask), which thanks to various reasons has been endlessly delayed. Glimpses are starting to appear however. Just weeks ago, the film’s opening titles made their way online and now, our first real look at Exeter has come courtesy of a trailer for its Chinese release.

Awash in the sort of slick dirty look Nispel brought to Chainsaw, this Exeter trailer seems intent on highlighting the film’s one-liners and demon eye-rolls. In the film, “six small-town teenagers find an old vinyl record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages. Lo and behold, a seemingly malevolent spirit quickly infiltrates the group, wreaking havoc as it moves from one body to another. Eventually, however, it’s revealed that the spirit in question is actually trying to convey a message… and that the real source of horror isn’t particularly paranormal, but rather something (or someone) much closer to home.”

Can we expect Exeter in 2015? Shock reached out to Nispel when the titles were uploaded to Vimeo and he noted they’re in negotiations for distribution, but couldn’t comment further. Find the trailer (from Bloody Disgusting) and the titles, below.
