Yes, a Halloween horror movie guide already. I always feel like September is a time of soft preparation for the juggernaut that is October. You’re thinking about what kind of costume you’re going to pull together. You’re also likely going through that extensive horror movie library and flagging the films you’d like to revisit. Yet, at the same time, you’ve got one eye on the upcoming movies release list to balance the “old” with some “new.” There’s nothing like the feeling of discovering a newly released horror film during Halloween. Seasonal movie programming is essential at this time of year, I think you’ll agree, so it’s time to look at what is out and what’s on the way between now and October 31st in theaters, on VOD and on DVD.
Give thanks to the VOD and DVD market because, without it, you would be fairly dry in the “theatrically released film” department. Sure, there’s a fair share of these films that are going into theaters, but we’re talking limited releases only. As far as the nationwide offerings, there are three or four.

September 5th
THE PACT 2

The Pact 2 is set just weeks after Annie Barlow’s deadly confrontation with the Judas Killer. In this sequel, we meet June, a woman whose carefully constructed life is beginning to unravel due to lucid nightmares so awful they disturb her waking life.
Caity Lotz returns without director Nicholas McCarthy. Dallas Hallam and Patrick Horvath of Entrance sit at the helm (wasn't too much of a fan of that film). Hearing mixed things about this one.

The survivors face a horrifying, uncertain future as they scramble for safety, but as their world collapses around them in chaos and terror will they choose real life through faith, or just try to survive?

Starring Michelle Hicks and Andrew W. Walker, the film focuses on a couple whose seemingly perfect dream home quickly becomes their nightmare.
Rachel and Kevin Foster are a couple who have finally found the ideal apartment where they can build a future and raise their children. It’s a fresh start for their sometimes troubled marriage, but as they begin to settle into their new home, their plans are quickly interrupted. Strange occurrences in the apartment begin to invade Kevin’s dreams and challenge Rachel’s sanity.
The hauntings are so terrorizing that Kevin is forced to delve into the history of their new home and he uncovers a shocking past that threatens to destroy his and Rachel’s future.

Nursing student Asuka (Atsuko Maeda) has just moved into an apartment complex with her parents and younger brother. On the first night in her new room, she is awoken by a strange scratching sound coming from the apartment of her neighbor, a reclusive old man who has refused all attempts at communication. Concerned over his well being, Asuka enters his home only to find him dead from malnutrition. Worse, it looks as if he had been trying to claw his way into her room.
Asuka learns that there have been a number of strange deaths in the complex over the years from Shinobu (Hiroki Narimiya), the handyman cleaning up the old man’s apartment. Even the girls at school whisper rumors of it being haunted. When the late night scratching returns, Asuka ventures back into her neighbor’s home and comes face to face with an apparition of the old man!
Panicked by the discovery of her apartment emptied and her family gone, Asuka seeks help from Shinobu, who brings in a spiritualist to exorcise Asuka of the evil surrounding her. However, as she delves into the girl’s predicament, the spiritualist discovers that signs points not to the old man but to a small boy living in the complex with a past as tragic as the one Asuka herself lives in denial of.

The film follows Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe), the number one suspect for the violent rape and murder of his girlfriend, Merrin (Juno Temple). Hungover from a night of hard drinking, Ig awakens one morning to find horns starting to grow from his own head and soon realizes their power drives people to confess their sins and give in to their most selfish and unspeakable impulses – an effective tool in his quest to discover the true circumstances of his late girlfriend’s tragedy and for exacting revenge on her killer.

For the next several months, cameras will record the everyday life of mother Deborah Logan [Jill Larson] and her daughter Sarah [Anne Ramsay]. But as the days progress, strange things begin to happen around Deborah that are not consistent with any findings about Alzheimer’s. It becomes apparent that there’s something besides Alzheimer’s that has taken control of Deborah’s life. It’s an evil that is far worse than the debilitating disease with which she was first diagnosed.
