The project’s origins began in 2012, when the L.A. Times reported Warner Bros. was working with writer/producer Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island, Avatar) and her partners Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt on the prequel.
Those three are still involved, however, Glenn Mazzara – former showrunner of The Walking Dead and showrunner of the upcoming Damien series – has penned an original script.
According to Variety:
…the film will tell the origin story of the Overlook Hotel through the eyes of its first owner, Bob T. Watson. A robber baron at the turn of the 20th century, Watson scaled the remote peaks of the Colorado Rockies to build the grandest resort in America, and a place he and his family would also call home.
Romanek has a long history of boarding projects and then leaving them. Will he actually stick around to see this one through? He previously helmed One Hour Photo and Never Let Me Go. He was also the original director on The Wolfman before he left that film.
