It stars Rob’s wife Sheri Moon Zombie as rock DJ Heidi who receives a wooden box containing a vinyl record by a group called “The Lords.” Assuming it’s a promo, she plays it with her colleague Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips) but the record starts playing backwards and suddenly, Heidi finds herself pulled into surreal and crazy situations involving a mysterious neighbor and a plan by the current witches of Salem to bring back their Dark Lords.
ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to sit down with Rob for a video interview at this year’s South by SouthWest Film Festival in Austin and we were surprised to learn that he’d never been to SXSW even with his band White Zombie and it was only his second film festival for The Lords of Salem following its premiere at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
On top of that, Rob Zombie has a new album with an even weirder title than anything you’ll see in “Lords” – it’s called “Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor” – and he’ll be touring that record all summer with the 2013 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.
In the video interview below, we spoke to Rob about:
- How he hasn’t done other festivals
- What got him interested in doing a movie about Salem and the witch trials
- Casting Sheri in a much bigger role
- How he hooked up with Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) as a producer
- Whether this ended up being a very different process from the “Halloween” movies
- How he went about casting the movie and trying to use the cast differently
- How he knew Sheri was ready to take on such a big role
- How he ends up shooting a lot of stuff that doesn’t end up in his movies leaving actors on the cutting room floor
- Whether or not he feels those scenes should be included on the DVDs
- How “House of 1,000 Corpses” began the current wave of studios making horror movieswithout benefitting from it
- Whether his opinion on horror remakes has changed since directing the “Halloween” movies
- Finding the creepy hallway that plays such a big part in the story
- How he tried getting away from handheld camerawork for the movie
- The influence of ’70s horror on his work
- His thoughts on how the music and movie business have changed due to technology and the advent of VOD and downloadable movies
And more!
The Lords of Salem opens in select cities on Friday, April 19th. Look for Ryan’s own interview with Rob and another video interview with Rob’s wife Sheri Moon Zombie and co-star Jeff Daniel Philips sometime before then.
