20 Great Horror Movies You’ve Likely Never Seen: Part 1

I am a huge fan of subterranean horror.

The confinement of being trapped underground almost always adds to the claustrophobic sense of helplessness that victims typically feel in a horror film.  Creep is no exception.

The unusual thing about Creep is that you don’t instantly like Kate, Franka Potente’s character.  But throughout the course of the film, Kate becomes more human and less of a thoughtless and self-centered shrew.  Creep, tragically, never received a U.S. theatrical release, which is part of why it has been largely overlooked by viewing audiences.

Director Christopher Smith is also responsible for Severance, Triangle and Black Death.

One of the many things I like about The Cottage is that you think you know where it’s going and then it takes off in a totally different direction.  Directed by Paul Andrew Williams, the film stars Andy Serkis (Golum, Caesar and mo-cap superstar) and Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentelmen) as two idiots who kidnap a ganster’s daughter and encounter a deranged farmer.

The Cottage makes you care for its characters, thus making it difficult to say goodbye to them when they are pulverized in a variety of ways.

The bickering between the main characters is so well played that you almost believe that they really don’t like each other.

Feed is absolutely revolting, but it’s brilliant, at the same time.  It’s a highly unique concept and doesn’t hold back for a second as it tells of an investigator who is tracking down a killer that force feeds women to death and does so by live-streaming his acts on the Internet.

Alex O’Loughlin, of Hawaii Five-O, plays the investigator who gets in over his head.  And, Brett Leonard (The Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity) directs.

There were scenes in Feed that completely turned my stomach, but it’s not fetishism for shock value, the film is telling a story about a counterculture that actually exists. It’s the kind of film that you absolutely must see, at least once.

(Editor’s note:  And yes, in this photo, he’s jerking off and feeding her a burger.  The movie’s f**kin’ warped.)
