Working with Natali on adaptation
Hardware and Dust Devil director Richard Stanley is teaming up with Vincenzo Natali, of Splice, for that adaptation of JG Ballard’s “High Rise” which we’ve been telling you about since last year.
In an interview with Bleeding Cool, Natali says, “Richard’s writing a draft right now…for years I had worked on High Rise myself, pretty much alone. At one point Rudy Wurlitzer had written a draft, He’s quite a well known screen writer. That hadn’t really worked out, and at a certain point, I just felt tapped out. So Jeremy Thomas suggested Richard who he had worked with in the past, so Richard’s come in and he’s really injected new blood into it. I think we’re going to nail it, I think it’s going to be great.”
When we spoke to Natali in January of this year about his adaptation of the ’75 novel, he told us: “Other filmmakers have attempted to make it and failed. It’s a very frightening, disturbing, transgressive and cool book written by one of my favorite authors. If we can make it, it’ll be incredible. It’s set in this enormous high rise, a vertical city. And it’s about the society that lives in there, this hermetic environment collapses. It’s a dangerous movie and not cheap. Two difficult things to combine.”
Stanley and Natali? They just might be able to crack this egg. Can’t wait to see what they come up with.
