But can’t beat the holiday trio
Add three new ways to deflect vampires: Introduce a James Cameron blockbuster, Sherlock Holmes and some annoying talking chipmunks to the box office.
Lionsgate’s Daybreakers hit theaters this weekend and opened at number four grossing an estimated $15 million. Not too bad at all. Topping the charts: Avatar at number one, Sherlock Holmes at number two and, in the third slot, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. All holdovers from the holiday season.
The Spierig brothers-directed bloodsucker action stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill. It looks like Lionsgate will be making back its budget on this one. The Australian siblings brought the film in for an impressive $20 million. We’ll see if this one’s got legs.
The next genre film to hit theaters in 2010 is Legion on the 22nd.
