Greutert: Saw Almost Turned to the Mafia?

Director talks crushed idea

Kevin Greutert, the latest director to sit at the helm of the Saw franchise, won’t divulge any plot details about Saw VI, but he did offer us a glimpse at what could have been…

“There was a point someone wanted the movie to be about Hoffman versus the mafia,” he reveals, “that was reminiscent of Saw II in which Jigsaw led the police into his lair and then pulled the rug out from under them.”

Greutert admittedly didn’t care for the idea. “It didn’t feel like Saw to me, we came back a week later and we came into the meeting. Marcus and Patrick offered the story and it was nothing like what we discussed with the mafia tale. And that never came up again.”

In the sixth entry, Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw’s legacy. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw’s grand scheme is finally understood.
