EXCL: Haley Bennett on Joe Dante’s The Hole

New hi-res photos revealed!

Actress Haley Bennett, fresh from the devil’s grip in The Haunting of Molly Hartley, ventured up to Vancouver earlier this year for Joe Dante’s The Hole, co-starring Teri Polo, Chris Massoglia and Nathan Gamble. In this 3-D thriller from the director of Gremlins and The Howling, a family moves into a new residence – where they meet, as Bennett describes herself, “the girl next door” – and discovers a sinister hole in their basement.

“It’s for the younger horror set,” Bennett explains to ShockTillYouDrop.com. And indeed it is, the script, by Vacancy‘s Mark L. Smith follows Massoglia, Gamble and Bennett’s characters as they come to learn the hole‘s secrets. “It’s very psychological. We all have fears, especially when we’re younger. I was afraid of clowns. It’s not my fear in the film, but it would be my fear in my life. And the hole feeds on your deepest, darkest fear. You don’t really know if everyone else is seeing what you’re seeing. We’re creating our own realities, but it does happen that we start seeing each other’s fears. We have to face them in order to set us free.”

“We worked a little bit on green screen and that was challenging,” she adds. “You have to tap into your imagination completely, especially when you’re supposed to be on a wooden roller coaster and you’re not far from the ground trying to save someone’s life, crying. It’s tough to go there.”

Bennett says she was thrilled to work with Dante, a director whose films she grew up on. “Joe is such a visionary director. All of this looks stunning and the 3-D really does add an extra dimension. It’s very dreamy. I never go into the hole but Chris Massoglia goes down and it’s this funky, Looney Tunes, alternative universe. It’s really cool.”

The Hole is premiering during the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness program. For a series of hi-res photos click here!
