Platinum Dunes Remake & Original Project Updates

The Birds, Butcherhouse & more

As far as 2009 is concerned, the fellas at Platinum Dunes are booked. A Nightmare on Elm Street is in production. They’re hoping a sequel to Friday the 13th gets the greenlight so they can begin shooting later this year.

Looking ahead to 2010, anything goes. Producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have a number of projects on the table – more original productions than remakes, believe it or not. We hit Fuller up for some status reports on a few titles. And if you’ve been following past Platinum Dunes updates, you’ll see not much has changed regarding the films below.

• The Birds: “We keep trying, but I don’t know. It’s so hard to get the script right. We continue to struggle,” says Fuller citing the challenges of taking such a remake include working under the shadow of Alfred Hitchcock and the limitations of what the birds can do. “Birds peck and poke. So there’s not a lot of variety. It’s a much harder movie to do. As you know, we lay ourselves out there and get annihilated all day long online and that movie just opens us up to a different level of annihilation. That doesn’t feel like it’s next for us.”

• The Butcherhouse Chronicles: “We’re close. It’s an original script. This feels more in the wheelhouse of Friday the 13th : fun horror, kids running around, not too much torture or pulling people’s nails or teeth out. Great villain. It feels pretty good. We don’t make these movies by sending people to sets and have them make it for us, our limitation is the amount of time Drew and I can spend on set. This year is spoken for, fortunately, so hopefully this is a 2010 movie for us.”

• Rosemary’s Baby: In short, it’s not going to happen. Nothing new there, but it deserves repeating so you can breathe a sigh of relief. Luckily, the project gave way to another infernal idea penned by Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s Scott Kosar. You can read more about it here.

More from Fuller and Form soon!
