Craven: There Are Still People Under the Stairs

Any room for Hills 3?

Three days after test screening The Last House on the Left in the San Fernando Valley (a little bird saw it and tells us it’s pretty good), Wes Craven sat down with ShockTillYouDrop.com to talk a number of projects, namely The People Under the Stairs. Written and directed by Craven in ’91, the film is due for a remake under the helmer’s Midnight Entertainment banner.

“There’s a pretty high likelihood Rogue would like to make People Under the Stairs as the next film we make,” Craven tells us, referring to the distribution arm of Universal that is releasing Last House and the director’s 25/8. “It will be a remake, not directed by me, but something Marianne Maddalena will produce after she completes The Last House on the Left.”

The original People followed a teen as he joined two thieves who leave their urban environs, venture into the suburbs and break into their landlords’ home only to discover the nightmares within. It’s a bit kooky, but at the heart of the film is a touch of class warfare – a theme Craven is unsure will make it into the remake. “That was written during the initial Bush administration where there was a coldness to the plight of the poor and, in some ways we’ve gone through that with son now. But he’s come to the end of his administration. If we have Obama in office? I don’t know if there’s going to be that same feeling. For all we know, he’s going to be great to the poor.”

“What we’ve done in the past is said, We’re interested come to us with concepts,” he continues. “With The Hills Have Eyes, we talked for years about that and couldn’t find anything that was doable for the price. It wasn’t until Alex Aja convinced us with his take.”

Speaking of… Does Craven think there’s still life for a third Hills movie? “I would like to think there is. It’s a very flexible concept, it could be anything. It doesn’t have to be people living in tunnels. Who knows?”

The Last House on the Left and 25/8 are due in theaters in 2009. We’ll keep you posted if further developments on People Under the Stairs come along.
