K-Dramas Like Park Bo-Gum’s Wonderland

Wonderland is a new South Korean movie starring Park Bo-Gum and Bae Suzy in lead roles. It is a heartwarming story that gives the characters a bittersweet experience. The film is part of the sci-fi genre and is about a pretend universe where people can meet their loved ones who cannot communicate in the real world. Wonderland, which was released on June 5, 2024, stars Bo-Gum, Suzy, Choi Woo-Shik, Jung Yu-Mi, and Tang Wei.

The film’s synopsis reads, “In Wonderland, a virtual world where A.I. simulates reunions, a 20-year-old woman requests to meet her coma-loving lover, and a 40-year-old man requests to meet his deceased wife.”

Several K-dramas have earlier explored a similar theme in the sci-fi genre, just like Wonderland. The storyline of Tomorrow, starring Rowoon, shows that he can communicate with others in a similar fashion like the Park Bo-Gum film. Meanwhile, Song Kang’s Love Alarm is connected to Wonderland from a sci-fi angle. On that note, here’s a look at some of the K-dramas that bear similarities with Wonderland.

Love Alarm

The 2019 K-drama Love Alarm is about a mobile phone app, Love Alarm, that notifies users if someone is interested in them within a meter distance. Jo-Jo is a high school student who lives with her aunt after her parents’ death. She doesn’t have a new phone and thus ignores the trending app. Unknown to her, Jo-Jo’s schoolmate Hye-Yeong has a crush on her. His best friend, Sun-Oh, is aware of his friend’s feelings and wants to test if they are real. So, he kisses Jo-Jo, leading to chaos in love lives and friendships.

The K-drama, starring Song Kang, Jung Ga-Ram, and Kim So-Hyun, is similar to Wonderland movie in terms of the genre. Both come under sci-fi romance dramas. The series is available to watch on Netflix.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow is a 2022 drama about a man, Choi Joon-Woong, who struggles to find a job. One day, he saves a person from committing suicide and gets to know about grim reapers Koo Ryeon and Im Ryoong-Gu. They are part of a “crisis management team” that prevents suicides in the human world. When Joon-Woong goes into a coma at a hospital, the team approaches him and turns him half-human and half-spirit. They hire Joon-Woong for their company, and he finally gets a job.

Tomorrow, which has a highly emotional plot, is available on Netflix. It stars Rowoon, Kim Hee-Sun, Lee Soo-Hyuk, and Yun Ji-On in lead roles. The connection between Tomorrow and Wonderland is that the lead character is in a coma and can communicate with the real world.

Signal

Signal is a sci-fi action-crime K-drama about Hae-Young, who witnessed the kidnapping of a young girl in his childhood. Later, her death made him distrust the police force. After 15 years, Hae-Young has become a cop and a criminal profiler. One day, he finds a walkie-talkie that connects him to Detective Jae-Han in a past timeline. Along with Soo-Hyun, the two solve cold cases.

This 2016 K-drama is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Signal features a star-studded lineup, including Lee Je-Hoon as Park Hae-Young, Jo Jin-Woong as Lee Jae-Han, and Kim Hye-Soo as Cha Soo-Hyun. This K-drama and Bo-Gum’s latest movie are science fiction and feature the theme of real and fictional worlds.

Memories of the Alhambra

Starring Hyun Bin and Park Shin-Hye, the 2019 sci-fi K-drama Memories of the Alhambra is similar to Wonderland because of its themes. It tells the story of an investment company’s CEO, Yoo Jin-Woo, and Jung Hee-Joo, who runs a hotel in Spain. The strong-spirited CEO visits Spain searching for a cryptic inventor of an augmented-reality video game. When they meet, the duo gets entangled in a series of mysterious events. Available on Netflix, the series is like Wonderland because of the sci-fi genre.
