Cameron Payne of the Philadelphia 76ers is among the handful of basketball players to revitalize his career and find his way back into the NBA. Accordingly, as rumors about his arrest started circulating, people became curious about what happened and why someone named Terry Johnson was being mentioned in connection to him.
Here is what we know about we have learned about Cameron Payne’s reported arrest.
Was Cameron Payne arrested?
On Tuesday, July 2, TMZ Sports reported that officers from Scottsdale Police Department apprehended Payne in Arizona last month after he refused to provide them his actual name multiple times. Per the police incident report acquired by TMZ Sports, Payne called emergency services around 2:44 a.m. on June 14 following a verbal spat with his girlfriend.
However, when the officers finally got there, the couple reportedly tried to assure them that they no longer needed the help of the authorities. TMZ Sports reports that Payne and his girlfriend told the police that their argument was merely a verbal exchange and they had both calmed down since then.
According to TMZ Sports, things became complicated after the police asked Payne his name and birth date. At first, Payne reportedly said that he was someone named Terry Johnson. When the officers reminded him that he would be arrested if he continued not cooperating, the 2021 NBA finalist purportedly responded, “That’s fine.”
This apparently continued for some time. According to TMZ Sports, the police officers report that at one point, the 29-year-old gave them his actual name only to claim immediately after that it was also fake and asking them to leave the scene. TMZ Sports mentions that Payne now faced charges for refusing to provide a truthful name and falsely reporting to law enforcement. An older NBC10 Philadelphia article, published on the day of the incident, reports that Payne was sent to Scottsdale City Jail and was later released. As of early July 2024, Payne has not put out a statement about these reports.
Cameron Payne is a point guard/shooting guard who joined the 76ers in 2024. In 2021, he played a pivotal role in his team the Phoenix Suns reaching the NBA finals.
