If you’re wondering whether the main cast — Mike Myers’ Shrek, Eddie Murphy’s Donkey, and Cameron Diaz’s Fiona — are returning or not, here are all the details.
Is Mike Myers returning as Shrek in Shrek 5?
UPDATE: Mike Myers’ Shrek is confirmed to return in Shrek 5.
Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri earlier told Variety that he is “keen” to bring back the original voice cast in the upcoming Shrek movie. In a conversation with GQ, Myers also expressed his genuine interest in lending his voice to Shrek. He mentioned he’d be “thrilled” to do one Shrek film a year. His love for the character opened doors for his return to the franchise. And now, fans would be thrilled to know that Myers will be voicing Shrek in the upcoming sequel as well.
Since Shrek (2001), Myers has perfectly depicted the Scottish accent of the clever and beloved character, entertaining the viewers. Throughout four installments, Shrek took the viewers on incredible adventures alongside his friends, while giving out some great lessons.
Is Eddie Murphy returning as Donkey in Shrek 5?
Eddie Murphy’s Donkey will return in Shrek 5.
In a conversation with Collider, Eddie Murphy discussed the success of the Shrek franchise. Further, he also gave a positive update on Shrek 5. According to Murphy, it is currently in production and he has begun the recordings too. This year, they will wrap up the recordings, and the movie is expected to arrive in 2025.
He said, “We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”
Subsequently, he revealed that a Donkey movie is also on their radar. He also clarified that it will come out after the upcoming Shrek. As of now, he hasn’t started recording for the Shrek spin-off.
Is Cameron Diaz returning as Fiona in Shrek 5?
UPDATE: Along with Myers and Murphy, Cameron Diaz is also confirmed to make a return to voice Fiona.
Previously, Diaz’s return seemed impossible, given that she took a break from acting in 2018. However, she is now back into business and will soon be seen in Netflix’s Back in Action. Following that, she would be returning to voice Fiona in Shrek 5.
