Lately, rumors have been going around suggesting that the celebrated 300 film franchise could receive another installment in the near future. The Zack Snyder directorial feature 300 originally came out in 2006 and met with astounding reviews from fans. Now, with many rumored projects currently on the way, fans have been wondering how many movies the franchise holds at the moment.
Here is a detailed look into the existing, as well as the forthcoming 300 projects that are allegedly in the works.
How many 300 films are there?
At the time of writing, there are two 300 films in the franchise.
Simply titled 300, the first movie in the franchise came out in 2006. The historical epic masterfully conveyed a fictionalized account of King Leonidas’ war against Persian king Xerxes, where he led a gallant army of 300 men against Xerxes’ 300,000 soldiers.
The sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire, directed by Noam Murro, hit the big screens in 2014 and presented a fictitious retelling of the Battle of Artemisium and the Battle of Salamis to the audience.
While there have been no additions to the profitable film series since then, talks of a prequel series have come out recently. According to a report by Variety, a 300 TV series is currently entering its early stages of development at the Warner Bros. headquarters. Despite the infamous fallout between Zack Snyder and the entertainment giant that occurred during the production of Justice League (2017), the filmmaker is reportedly in talks to helm the project. Nevertheless, the studio has yet to provide any confirmation on the subject.
Is there a 300: Rise of an Empire sequel and third movie?
While there has been no official news regarding a third 300 film, an addition to the franchise could be on the cards.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder has successfully regained the rights to Blood and Ashes from Warner Bros. Snyder initially envisioned the said movie to be a direct sequel to 300: Rise of an Empire. But, during its inception, the script ended up centering around a homosexual love story between Alexander the Great and his commander, Haphaestion. According to Zack, then-Warner executive Courtenay Valenti was extremely supportive of the idea. However, Warner Bros’ upper management ultimately scrapped the project.
With Zack and his wife, Deborah Snyder, retrieving the rights to this idea, a third 300 film could soon become a reality. The Dawn of the Dead director has stated that the movie could come to fruition if he sets his mind to it. Nonetheless, it is unknown at this moment whether the said project would follow the timeline of 300: Rise of an Empire or if it would convey a stand-alone story that takes place in the same universe.
Snyder has recently collaborated with Netflix for his Rebel Moon film series, the second part of which was recently rolled out on the platform. Consequently, the highly revered streaming platform could become a possible outlet for the next Zack Snyder-300 extravaganza. However, these speculations have not received any confirmation from any party at the moment.
