Fans of Godzilla Minus One are curious to know if the movie will ultimately get a direct sequel. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki and set against the backdrop of postwar Japan, the film tells the story of a former Kamikaze pilot grappling with his internal feelings of guilt while he faces the threat of the monstrous Godzilla.
So will the story established by Godzilla Minus One continue? Here are your answers.
Will there be a Godzilla Minus One sequel?
At the time of writing, a sequel to Godzilla Minus One has not been officially confirmed.
However, several hints within the film suggest the possibility of a continuation. The neck tattoo sported by Noriko and a chunk of Godzilla’s flesh regenerating at the tail-end of the film teased the possibility of a sequel.
As per ComicBook, Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One’s director expressed his interest in developing a sequel. During a December 2023 Q&A session with Movie Walker, Yamazaki said that he wanted to see a continuation of the stories of the principal cast namely Shikishima, Noriko, Mizushima, Noda, Akitsu, and Tachibana and that a potential sequel would focus on what happened to them after their encounter with Godzilla in the first movie.
Later in a February 2024 Q&A with Collider, Yamazaki explained that his next film would not be a Godzilla Minus One sequel. However, if he does make a sequel, he would place its events three years after the events of the first film. This would likely deal with the established story element of Godzilla’s healing and how that relates to his return and the surprise return of Noriko at the end of Godzilla Minus One.
Given the film’s massive box office success and immense positive critical and audience reception, chances of a sequel happening are very likely, though when it will happen is currently unknown.
