Since its premiere on December 25, 2020, Netflix’s period-drama series Bridgerton has become a cultural sensation. Based on Julia Quinn’s book series of the same name, Bridgerton takes place in the Regency era. It revolves around the young members of the eponymous family navigating English high society in the pursuit of love. Season 1 is an adaptation of the first book, The Duke and I. Season 2 is based on the second book, The Viscount Who Loved Me. After two successful seasons, the third season recently made its way to fans. Now, some are wondering whether Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie Beckett — two protagonists of the third book, An Offer from a Gentleman — marry in Season 3.
Here is what we discovered about Benedict and Sophie in Bridgerton Season 3.
Does Benedict get married to Sophie in Bridgerton Season 3?
Benedict probably does not marry Sophie in the third season of Bridgerton.
Netflix officially announced in 2022 that the third season would not adapt An Offer from a Gentleman. Instead, it would move on to the fourth entry in the book series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which revolves around Benedict’s brother Colin and his relationship with Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).
However, showrunner Jess Brownell assured the fans that Benedict would still be an important part of the narrative. “We already differ from the books a little bit because we’re an ensemble show,” she explained in a May 2022 interview with Variety. “The books really focus on one…romantic pair at a time and maybe the siblings have a little cameo here and there but they don’t have full stories. In that way, even though we’re reversing the order of the books, I think all the people you would expect to see—Benedict, who is book three, he will be a vital part of Season 3,” she added.
The third season has been split into two parts, each comprising four episodes. The first part premiered on May 16, and Part 2 will come out on June 13. Sophie has not appeared in the series as of Season 2. It’s unlikely that Bridgerton writers will tell her and Benedict’s story in its entirety in a season dedicated to another couple. Notably, Brownell used the phrase “reversing the order of the books” while elaborating on the changes. This can potentially mean the fourth season will be an adaptation of the third book and focus on Benedict and Sophie.
Do Benedict and Sophie get married in the book?
Yes, Benedict and Sophie marry in An Offer from a Gentleman. Sophie is the Earl of Penwood’s illegitimate daughter. She endures abuse from her stepmother and later meets Benedict at Lady Bridgerton’s masquerade ball. At the end of the novel, Sophie and Benedict exchange wedding vows. The epilogue, set seven years later, reveals that Sophie and Benedict have three children together and are expecting their fourth.
