She will reportedly portray Kerr’s wife Dawn Staples in the upcoming film.
Speaking to Variety, Johnson reflected on what drew him to the project. “Benny wants to create, and continues to push the envelope when it comes to stories that are raw and real, characters that are authentic and at times uncomfortable and arresting,” the Red Notice star said.
Continuing, he added, “I’m at a point in my career where I want to push myself in ways that I’ve not pushed myself in the past. I’m at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter, that explore a humanity and explore struggle [and] pain.”
Johnson told Entertainment Tonight in March 2024 that the production for The Smashing Machine would begin before the live-action Moana film. Considering that the latter is slated to come out on June 27, 2025, the filmmakers would likely want to wrap production on that project by the end of this year.
