Fans are wondering if The Good Doctor has been canceled after Season 7, which recently debuted on ABC. If yes, then why is it ending? Could there be more seasons? Here’s everything you need to know.
Why The Good Doctor was canceled after season 7?
The Good Doctor ends after season 7 because both ABC and the creatives feel that it’s the right time to conclude the story.
Despite continuing to have good overall ratings and viewership, and Freddie Highmore’s willingness to continue, The Good Doctor is ending with Season 7. Deadline revealed that creator David Shore had the following to say about ending the series:
“We’ve been lucky enough to plan the ending we want to do. This has been a weird year. Only doing 10 episodes is unfortunate. But being able to go out on your own terms is a blessing,”
He also said that he knew where the show was going to end even before ABC gave him the call to end it. He said:
“Years ago when I was doing another show, someone asked, ‘Do you know how the show is going to end?’ [He said] Yes, I know exactly how this show will end. One day I will get a call from the network.”
Further, executive producer Liz Friedman stated the ending allowed them to plan a great finale for the story that’s centered around the autistic Surgeon, Dr. Shaun, who is also a father now. The creators wanted the series to end on its terms instead of having an unfinished story. That’s why everyone involved collectively decided to end the show.
Will there be more seasons of The Good Doctor?
With The Good Doctor concluding its story in Season 7, it’s unlikely that it will get more seasons in the future.
Season 7 shows how Dr. Shaun will manage parenthood, family, and work together, but most importantly, it will bring his story to a fitting end. So, we shouldn’t expect there to be any more seasons, unless David Shore has a way to revitalize the story, having another network pick up the show years down the line.
