Station 19 recently announced its end after the upcoming season. So, people are wondering why the long-running TV series is being canceled on ABC. Is there a chance for it to be renewed later? Here’s all you need to know.
Why was Station 19 canceled?
The exact reason why Station 19 has been canceled is currently unknown, but it is likely due to industry-wide budget cuts to scripted dramas.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, many successful and long-running shows are coming to an end and ABC’s decision to cancel Station 19 may have been motivated by a comparison with the somewhat similar series 9-1-1, which has now been given Station 19’s old 8 pm time slot for Thursdays. Meanwhile, Station 19’s final season has been moved to the 10 pm slot on Thursdays starting from March 14, 2024.
Station 19 reportedly ended up as the #13 drama on ABC’s 2022-23 broadcast season while 9-1-1 was at #1. The show also had behind-the-scenes drama and multiple showrunner changes, all of which may have contributed to the decision to end Station 19 with Season 7.
Per Deadline, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich reacted to the series ending with its final 10 episodes saying:
“For seven seasons, Station 19 has been a highlight of the ABC lineup thanks to Shonda and Betsy’s incredible vision, beloved characters, and compelling storytelling. With [showrunners] Zoanne [Clark] and Peter [Paige] at the helm of the upcoming farewell season, we have so much to look forward to, most notably the celebration of the show’s milestone 100th episode.”
Now, it’ll be interesting to see how the show is brought to its end after 100+ episodes.
Will Station 19 ever be renewed?
Since the story of Station 19 is being concluded, its renewal may not happen in the future.
Though abrupt, the final 10 episodes present the opportunity for the showrunners to create a conclusive ending to the series. Considering this, it’s unlikely that ABC will reverse its decision.
The best hope that Station 19 appears to have for a renewal is if another network or streaming service picks up the show for Season 8. However, nothing is confirmed as of writing.
