Those planning to watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2024) on Amazon Prime Video wish to find out if the latest series is a remake of the original 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie movie of the same name. So, here are all the details.
Is Mrs and Mrs Smith (2024) a remake of the 2005 movie?
Amazon Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2024) is not a remake of the 2005 movie. It is a reimagined story told in the same universe.
Since the latest show features Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s respective roles as John and Jane Smith, many thought that the series could be a remake. But that isn’t the case as John and Jane Smith are spy aliases. They were initially given to Pitt and Jolie’s characters. Now Glover and Erskine’s new spies have got the same names.
But that doesn’t qualify the latest show to be a remake. As per series co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane, the show takes place in the same universe as the film. But it tells a different story. In an interview with The Direct, she said:
“Yeah… I think even though our show is obviously its own thing and has its own tone, there are some Easter eggs to allude to the fact that it is still within that same world.”
So obviously, the series cannot be a remake in that case. It does use a few similar elements in its overall narrative. But there are quite a few changes in the reimagination of the story. Even though it is more of a spinoff set in the world of the original film, fans shouldn’t expect a cameo from Pitt and Jolie’s characters.
Sloane also confirmed this by saying:
“I’ll be real, Donald and Brad hung out. There was, you know, some,–But you know, he gave us his blessings and love for the show.”
Beyond that, they won’t be returning. Instead, we could hope for the series to continue with a second season. But it hasn’t officially been renewed yet.
