According to Paul King, the director of Wonka, the film is not a musical despite having many songs.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Paul King, the director of Wonka, said that the film is not a proper musical despite having many dance and song sequences and despite Timothée Chalamet getting to put on a singing voice for much of them. King also affirmed that the movie is not a musical where characters sing to each other dialogue, but rather it is a fantasy movie that has songs in it.
