Rio 3 Release Date Rumors: When Is It Coming Out?

Released in 2011, Rio is a computer-animated musical adventure comedy film developed by Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox Animation. Set in the eponymous Brazilian city, the plot revolves around Blu, a male Spix’s macaw, who returns to Brazil 15 years after he was smuggled to America to mate with the apparent last female of his species, Jewel.

Following the premiere, the movie garnered a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and $484.6 million at the box office against its $90 million budget. This led to the development of Rio 2, which came out in 2014 and accumulated a 48% approval rating and $498.8 million at the box office against its $100-130 million budget. If you are curious about when Rio 3 is coming out, you have come to the right place.

Here’s all the Rio 3 release date information we know so far, and all the details on when it is coming out.

Is there a Rio 3 release date?

Rio 3’s release date could arrive by 2025 at the earliest.

After the premiere of the second film, Carlos Saldanha, the director of both parts 1 and 2, reflected on the prospect of a third film in an interview with Cinemblend. “It’s a little early, granted,” he said. “I want to see how Rio is accepted by the audience, and how people take this sequel. Of course, I have a lot of stories to tell, so we’re [starting to] prepare for it. Because we love these characters so much, and there are a lot of things in my head that maybe I couldn’t put in the movie. I wanted to take them to a different place. So I don’t know yet. We’ll see what happens.”

Anne Hathaway, who voices the female protagonist Jewel in the film series, told the same outlet that she would love to be part of the project. “I never really let myself go there, because there are writers and a director and a whole film studio,” the actress said. “I’m just happy to show up for the ride! I mean, I trust these guys. They know these characters inside and out, and they tell great stories. I just hope that I’m there!”

Other actors, including Jamie Foxx, speculated on the potential setting for the third film. After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in October 2019, it was reported that a Rio spin-off about Foxx’s character Nico and Pedro, voiced by will.i.am, was being developed for Disney Plus. However, Disney shut down Blue Sky Studios in April 2021, leaving the spin-off with an uncertain future.

In 2022, it was reported during the promotion for The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wil that Rio 3 was in development, with Jim Hecht (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty) penning the script. As nothing much about the project has been reported since then and due to the ongoing actors’ strike, it can be speculated that Rio 3 will come out in 2025 at the earliest.

This date is an estimation based on the information we have at the time of this writing.

The potential voice cast for Rio 3 might include Jesse Eisenberg as Blu, Anne Hathaway as Jewel, Leslie Mann as Linda, Rodrigo Santoro as Tulio, Rachel Crow as Carla, Pierce Gagnon as Tiago, Amandla Stenberg as Bia, will.i.am as Pedro, Jamie Foxx as Nico, George Lopez as Rafael, Tracy Morgan as Luiz, Jemaine Clement as Nigel, and more.

Where is Rio 3 coming out?

The official synopsis for Rio 2 reads:

“It’s a jungle out there for Blu, Jewel, and their three kids after they’re hurtled from Rio de Janeiro to the wilds of the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in, he goes beak-to-beak with the vengeful Nigel, and meets the most fearsome adversary of all: his father-in-law.”
