Viewers of New Amsterdam are wondering if the hospital is a real place and location. For those curious about where the series has been filmed, here’s all of the must-know info.
Is the New Amsterdam Hospital a real place?
New Amsterdam is filmed on location in a real hospital, but the show’s “New Amsterdam Hospital” itself is fictional.
While Dr. Max Goodwin is the leading man in the series, the “New Amsterdam Hospital” could also be considered a main character. However, this isn’t a hospital that exists in the real world as it was created specifically for the series, taking inspiration from another hospital.
In fact, the show bases many of its elements on things in the real world while showcasing the proceedings of running a hospital. That way, the hospital feels very real, and the events in the series feel believable. Even Dr. Max Goodwin is based on a real doctor named Eric Manheimer.
Where is the New Amsterdam filming location?
New Amsterdam was filmed at the Bellevue Hospital in New York City.
It was founded as a tiny infirmary with only a couple of beds in 1736 but grew into a massive medical treatment center with all the modern-day facilities. It currently stands as the oldest hospital in the US and has over 840 beds in operation. The Bellevue Hospital is among the 11 hospitals that are a part of the biggest municipal healthcare delivery network in the country, “The NYC Health + Hospitals.” (via NYC Health and Hospitals)
Bellevue allows the series to feel authentic. However, a huge credit for its realism also goes to the show’s real-life inspiration, Dr. Eric Manheimer. He was the chief medical officer at Bellevue Hospital for 15 years. Following his departure, he wrote a book titled “Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital,” which ultimately inspired the series. Dr. Manheimer is also credited as a writer and a producer for the show.
