With the live-action adaptation streaming on Netflix, many fans wonder whether the One Piece source material is over. Is the One Piece manga finished? And what about the anime? Here’s what you need to know about Luffy and his crew’s journey.
Is the One Piece anime over?
No, the One Piece anime is still running.
The anime premiered in October 199 and, despite over 1,074 episodes, is still ongoing. Actually, the series is far from being over, as Luffy isn’t quite close to becoming the Pirate King. The anime is currently adapting the Wano Country Arc, which follows the mugiwara’s attempt to liberate Wano Country from the tyrannical rule of Kurozumi Orochi and the pirate Emperor Kaido. In the United States, it is possible to watch the anime on Crunchyroll. The anime remains faithful to the manga but includes numerous filler episodes.
Is the One Piece manga over?
The One Piece manga is expected to end in 2024 or 2025.
One Piece debuted in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997 and is one of the most popular manga ever published. As teased by creator Eiichiro Oda in 2019, his intentions were to conclude the series in approximately five years, which meant 2024 or 2025. He also mentioned the manga would span just over 100 volumes (currently, 106 volumes have been published), adding that he had contemplated the ending since his college days.
What will happen once the One Piece manga is over? As mangaka Oda mentioned, he would love to explore more stories featuring characters like Monkey D. Garp and Monkey D. Dragon, despite their relatively minor roles in the series. For now, fans must patiently wait to find out whether Luffy will find the much-coveted One Piece treasure.
