Once again, the Electronic Entertainment Expo will be an online-only event due to the ongoing concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement made to GamesBeat, the Entertainment Software Association confirmed the news for E3 2022, telling the outlet that the “ongoing health risks” surrounding the pandemic were once again forcing the convention to be held in a strictly virtual setting.
“Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022,” the ESA said in its statement. “We are nonetheless excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

This marks the second year in a row that the biggest and generally most popular gaming convention has gone digital, with the 2020 convention being outright canceled following the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the moment, it’s unclear what companies will do in the wake of the announcement, but throughout the past two years, there has been an uptick in studios having their own conferences, so it’s likely that will continue in 2022.
