Sega promised that it would show off the new Sonic the Hedgehog game at The Game Awards and it has delivered. The company fully revealed Sonic Frontiers, which is a 3D, open-world take on the franchise. It is coming sometime in holiday season of 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Sega didn’t call it an open-world title and referred to it as an “open-zone-inspired” one instead that will put typical Sonic zones in an open world. This world is set in Starfall Islands, which includes a number of different biomes.
Morio Kishimoto is leading the Sonic Team-developed title. Kishimoto has a history with the series as he directed Sonic Colors, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Forces and was the lead game designer on Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic Colors. Sonic Team USA Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka spoke about the upcoming title.
“Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike,” he said. “With the effort of the talented developers at Sonic Team Japan, we’ve created an all-new style of gameplay experience for Sonic the Hedgehog, where players will be able to explore lush and expansive landscapes with Sonic’s signature speed and abilities. There’s sure to be lots of twists and turns around every corner in Sonic Frontiers, and we’re excited to unveil more information about the game over the coming months.”

This game was teased in May 2021 during the Sonic Central stream celebrating Sonic’s 30th anniversary. The trailer didn’t show much, only the hedgehog from the neck down sprinting through a forest. And while Sega didn’t officially reveal the name, but metadata on the video implied that it was called “Sonic Rangers,” a name that turned out to be inaccurate. However, Sega did trademark “Sonic Frontiers,” which backed up a post found on 4Chan (via Reddit) that gave the same title as well as its Breath of the Wild inspirations.
