According to a recent preview of the class from GameSpot’s Phil Hornshaw, the Phalanx will sport a deployable shield that helps keep the Xenomorph threat at bay while your team tries to mow them down. The shield is able to defend players from melee damage and other types of attacks and makes the Phalanx class act more like a tank than anything else the game has to offer at the moment.

The preview also notes that the Phalanx’s shield is highly effective, but can only be used alongside handguns and close-quarter weapons, so players who want to use the class will want to stick close with a teammate or be very adept at smaller weapons in order to survive for longer periods of time. The Phalanx class also comes with its own ability, Shock Pulse, which allows it to trigger a point-blank shock attack that stuns nearby enemies and can cause other enemies to be dazed.

The Phalanx class will arrive with Season 1 of Aliens: Fireteam Elite, which is free to everyone who currently owns the game. Much like other games out nowadays, Aliens: Fireteam Elite will follow a seasonal structure that will give players regular content.
