The Extras:

Click the link above to see my review of the bonus features included on the previous DVD edition. Here’s the new stuff that you’ll find in addition to that:

Inside the Mind of Michel Gondry – This feature discusses the French director and his movie making style. They talk about how he came on board the film, his accent, how he worked with the actors, how he likes to shoot, and more. A theme that is reiterated through the whole feature was the fact that a lot of his ideas were hard to describe but they looked great in the end. He apparently likes to think outside the box.

Anatomy of a Scene: Saratoga Avenue – This feature gets heavy into the making of a scene from the film. It covers the script, the filming on location, the visual effects, the special effects, the music, and more. It’s a great way to show how everyone in the production contributed to the scene. It’s quite impressive just how much time and effort went into it. You also see some bloopers and behind the scenes footage of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. This feature also shows alternate versions of the scene that haven’t been seen before.

A Conversation with Kate Winslet and Director Michel Gondry – During this interview with Kate Winslet, Gondry wanders in and soon becomes involved with the interview. They talk about Winslet joining the film, throwing ideas out to Gondry, etc etc etc. If you’re a Winslet or Gondry fan you’ll thoroughly enjoy this.

Deleted & Extended Scenes – There aren’t many deleted scenes here, but the ones included are impressive. There are a number of scenes showing Jim Carrey’s character with his old girlfriend. She seems nice enough and humors Carrey’s quirkiness. Another scene shows Kirsten Dunst’s character learning that she not only had her memory erased, but she had an abortion. Then there’s a greatly extended scene between Winslet and Carrey when they first meet.

Souvenir Booklet – This is a booklet featuring a lot of glowing quotes from various movie reviews along with photos from the film.

The Bottom Line:

If you already own Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, then the extras on this Collector’s Edition DVD probably aren’t worth buying. However, if you’re a big fan of the film or if you’re planning on buying it, then this is the definitive version to get.
