Synopsis:
This is a French movie with English subtitles.
Vincent is a businessman who has recently lost his job. However, he has not told his wife, family, or friends. He simply drives around the country doing nothing while calling his wife pretending to be at work. His deception becomes more elaborate as he tells everyone he has started a new job. Vincent starts soliciting them for money for investments. As he becomes more wrapped up in his fantasy world and financial schemes, he starts to become more and more distant with his family. He soon must tell the truth or risk losing them.
“Time Out” is rated PG-13 for sensuality.
The Movie:
This is not my kind of movie at all. It’s French. It’s depressing. None of the characters are sympathetic. Overall it’s a real bore. I really hated it.
The main character is simply a moron. To lose your job, then drive around doing nothing all day while making fake work calls to your wife is just stupid. Then to get involved with illegal activities in order to make money is even dumber. If the filmmakers were trying to make me feel sorry for the guy it didn’t work. What’s more baffling is that everyone in the film seems to be OK with this. Maybe it’s a cultural thing, but I had no respect for the guy.
I’m generally up for a foreign film if it has something interesting to offer, but yuppie angst isn’t exactly entertainment to me. Obviously some people enjoyed it since there are glowing reviews all over the DVD cover (“A Masterpiece!” “Truly Haunting!”), but I saw absolutely nothing redeeming about it.
The Extras:
There are no extras on this DVD.
The Bottom Line:
I would not recommend this one at all unless you enjoy depressing French dramas.
