Mini-Review:
There are only a handful of TV shows that I watch on a regular basis. They include “Lost,” “My Name is Earl,” “The Office,” and “Battlestar Galactica.” It was a little hard for me to get into it at first, but once it got rolling, my wife and I were hooked. It’s a fantastic combination of drama, action, intrigue, romance, and mystery. Unfortunately, the story is so complex it’s almost impossible to jump in from the middle of the series. You really need to start at the very beginning. Galactica newbies should really go out and buy the first season before purchasing this one, but you’ll be glad you did. Unfortunately Season 2 is broken up into two sets. This is the second half of the season.
A lot happens in this second season. A Cylon/human hybrid is born, President Roslin deals with her terminal cancer, Starbuck returns to Caprica, a second Battlestar appears, and more. The Cylons are also developed into more complex characters. We find out who more of the hidden Cylons are, we meet more copies of the established Cylons, and we meet the Red Baron of the Cylons named Scar. A couple of recognizable genre stars also appear in cameos Lucy Lawless and Dean Stockwell.
But what I’ll most remember Season 2 for is the shocking season finale. I won’t spoil anything here, but in the last 15 minutes of the show, the story flashes forward a year or two into the future. Every character has dramatically changed over that time and you’re left reeling over the total shift in the storyline. It’s one of the most dramatic and gutsy moves I’ve ever seen a TV series take.
If you’re any kind of sci-fi or drama fan, “Battlestar Galactica” is required viewing. Check it out now the gods demand it!
As for the bonus features, there’s a good selection if you’ve never followed the series online. If you have, then you’ve seen most of this stuff before. If you’re like me and didn’t go to their website, it’s all new. They include video blogs that take you behind the scenes. You see the writers interacting with the actors, the cast clowning around, the sets, the props, and more. It’s a very lighthearted but detailed insider’s look. Podcasts, which were simply online commentaries with executive producer Ronald D. Moore, are also included on most of the episodes. New for this DVD are some deleted scenes for many of the episodes. But most notable is 15 minutes of extra footage added to the “Pegasus” episode.
