The Movie:
Hellraiser: Hellworld is your standard horror fare. It has a plot that makes little sense, pretty young people running around and getting picked off one by one, gore, and sex. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have much original to offer. Like the last Hellraiser movie, it is actually a non-Hellraiser script tweaked around to be one of the numerous sequels in the series. A twist at the end makes it interesting, but that’s not quite enough to make it worth enduring the rest of the movie. And despite the fact that the cover makes it looks like Pinhead is in cyberspace, he’s not. The online world has very, very little to do with this movie.
Joining the Hellraiser series is Lance Henriksen. Though he’s done his fair share of stinkers in the past, he seems to add an element of class to the film. In fact, he’s more menacing than Pinhead himself. The rest of the cast is rather forgettable, but Katheryn Winnick as Chelsea, the heroine, is a pretty face to look at as the mayhem unfolds. She might be good if given some better material.
The Extras:
There are only two bonus features on this DVD. The first is your standard “making of” video. It has behind the scenes footage, interviews with the cast and crew, and more. Unfortunately only two of the cast members appear for interviews. The second bonus feature is the commentary by the crew. They talk about filming overseas, a bit about adapting the story, and tales from the set. Again, it’s your standard DVD fare.
The Bottom Line:
I can’t really recommend this movie to anyone other than Hellraiser fans. It’s not scary enough or unique enough to recommend it as a great horror film. Fans of Lance Henriksen may enjoy seeing him in this film, but otherwise it doesn’t have much to offer.
