The Movie:
Since this movie is 30 years old, chances are you probably already have seen Jaws. You also probably already know if you want to add it to your DVD collection. But if you’re one of those rare souls that hasn’t seen Jaws, then I recommend you stop reading this now and go out and buy it. Here are a few reasons why this movie is worth checking out:
– Jaws was the first blockbuster by Steven Spielberg.
– Jaws is a great horror / adventure film.
– Jaws started the whole summer popcorn movie revolution.
– Jaws features one of John Williams’ best musical scores.
– Jaws features fantastic performances by Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss
In short, just go see it if you haven’t already. It may be 30 years old, but it’s a terrific adventure.
The Extras:
I already owned Jaws on DVD, so I was wondering what this 30th Anniversary Edition had to offer that the 25th Anniversary Edition didn’t have. Well, this version doesn’t have the trivia game, screensavers, or the Shark World feature that the other version did, but many of the other features are identical. They both have deleted scenes, outtakes, production photos, and storyboards.
The main difference is that this DVD has the full version of “The Making of Jaws”. This two hour documentary originally appeared on the Jaws laserdisc in the 90’s. It then reappeared in a 1 hour version on the 25th Anniversary DVD. Now for the 30th Anniversary it is fully restored to its 2 hour version. It’s an absolutely fantastic documentary. The story of the making of Jaws is almost as exciting and intriguing as the movie itself. It was written, produced, and directed by Laurent Bouzreau. If you’ve seen it in one of its previous incarnations, then you know how good it is. The question is if you already own it, is it worth buying Jaws again to get the full version?
This 30th Anniversary Edition also has an interview with Steven Spielberg from the set of Jaws. They were only on the second day of filming at that point and the 20 something Spielberg was interviewed by a camera crew (while eating lunch). There’s not much to see of the filming and they talk a lot about The Sugarland Express, but it’s interesting to see young Spielberg talking about directing and casting his films.
The final extra with this DVD is a little book filled with quotes from the actors and a number of production photos. It just repeats a lot of the stuff already on the DVD, so it’s not that much of an incentive to buy the DVD.
The Bottom Line:
Jaws: 30th Anniversary Edition is a great film well worth adding to your collection, but if you already own the 25th Anniversary Edition, it doesn’t have a lot more to offer.
