Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Hitch, which earned more than $177 million in theaters, shot to the top of the sales and rental charts its first week in stores. Hitch outsold its nearest rival, Buena Vista’s Tarzan II by a 4-1 margin.
The Will Smith and Kevin James comedy generated $10.8 million in rentals, the biggest opening week since Buena Vista’s National Treasure also took in $10.8 million the first week in May.
Tarzan II debuted on the chart at No. 2, a strong showing for a made-for-video title. Another newcomer that cracked the top 10 was Universal’s 10th anniversary edition DVD of Casino, which bowed at No. 7.
Meanwhile, Buena Vista’s The Incredibles reclaimed the No. 1 spot on the VHS sales chart after 13 weeks in release. It is one of eight animated kid videos in the top 10.
