The Truth About Jim is an ID docuseries following Sierra Barter’s two-year investigation to discover the truth about Jim Mordecai, her step-grandfather. Reportedly, Mordecai was sexually and physically abusive towards the women in the family. However, as the investigation progressed, it presumably became evident that he might have perpetrated the violence on other teenage girls. The series premiered on Max on February 15, 2024, and is currently streaming online.
According to Huff Post, despite all the violence that he perpetrated on his family and allegedly against other women, Jim Mordecai was never caught or convicted by authorities and died of cancer in 2008. Sierra Barter, who led the investigation into Mordecai’s crimes, had no personal relationship with him. The outlet mentioned that her mother, Shannon Barter, was estranged from Sierra’s grandmother’s mother, Judy, during the years when the latter was married to Mordecai.
Jim Mordecai was reportedly a respected teacher in the San Francisco Bay area. He retired early from his profession due to an allegation involving the assault on his student. Although this was how others learned about his tendencies, his partners and other family members were no strangers to his sexual and physical violence.
The docuseries also includes accounts of Mordecai’s second wife, Jeanne Kirkpatrick. She said that he would have sudden fits of rage and overturned the dining table once. But Christi, Jeanne’s daughter, describes a more harrowing experience. Christi was sexually assaulted when she was 13 years old. She resisted and reportedly caused a scratch on his face. When asked about it, he claimed it was because of the razor he used, according to the documentary.
Jim Mordecai’s family found a mysterious jewelry box in his possession after he died
After Jim Mordecai died, Shannon Barter was reportedly cleaning out his things when she came across a jewelry box that she found to be mysterious, considering how out of place it was among his other things. As per her account, the box consisted of some cheap jewelry that probably belonged to teenagers. In 1972, an earring was also found by one of the victims of the Santa Rosa Murders. Moreover, Shannon Barter claimed she saw one that perfectly matched that in the box, although they hadn’t stored the box and discarded it after his death.
According to the documentary, much of Sierra Barter’s investigation revolves around drawing comparisons between the kind of violence Jim Mordecai perpetrated and the nature of what was done in the Santa Rosa Murders. The Santa Rosa Murders are a series of seven murders of female hitchhikers that occurred in 1972 and 1973, a time when the family recalls that Mordecai spent a lot of time there, Rolling Stone reported.
According to People, Sierra’s investigation included meeting various people and collecting extensive information about who her step-grandfather was. She also managed to collect DNA evidence that could confirm if Jim Mordecai was the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murderer.
However, the series does not provide a conclusion as to whether or not he was a serial killer. It further includes the possible similarities between the violence initiated by Mordecai and the murders of the Zodiac killer. However, The Zodiac Killer did not sexually violate any of his victims. On the other hand, Jim Mordecai had strong tendencies to perpetrate sexual violence, making a match unlikely.
The Truth About Jim is a four-part ID docuseries currently streaming on Max.
