The Hashira’s rank in the world of Demon Slayer is attributed to their phenomenal strength and skills. They are reputed as the most excellent swordsmen against Muzan Kibutsuji and his demons. Unfortunately, some Hashira, despite their skills, have perished against the regenerative abilities of demons. This article looks at all the Hashira who died in Demon Slayer in chronological order.
Kyojuro Rengoku (Flame Hashira)
The Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku, is a primary character in Demon Slayer’s Mugen Train arc. His father, Shinjuro Rengoku, was a former Flame Hashira, and he did not get along with Kyojuro.
Unfortunately, the father and son could not make amends before Kyojuro’s tragic death while fighting the Upper Moon Rank Three demon, Akaza. The latter tries attacking an injured Tanjiro, prompting Rengoku to action.
Despite launching fatal blows on the demon, his regenerative abilities overpower Rengoku’s Flame Breathing. In the end, he could not defend himself against Akaza’s Destructive Death attacks and eventually died.
Shinobu Kocho (Insect Hashira)
Shinobu Kocho becomes the Insect Hashira as a promise to protect her sister. However, Kanae was slain by the Upper Moon Rank Two demon, Doma, and Kocho makes it her mission to kill the demon.
During the Infinity Castle arc, Shinobu enters Muzan’s Infinity Castle. She finds Doma devouring women, but Shinobu’s interference annoys him. Shinobu stabs the demon’s eye using Insect Breathing: Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter.
After exchanging various blows with each other, Shinobu, while on the verge of death, infuriates Doma by signaling the demon’s abilities to Kanao. The annoyed demon crushes her spine and kills her.
Muichiro Tokito (Mist Hashira)
One of the major supporting characters during the Swordsmith Village arc, Muichiro Tokito has one of the most tragic deaths in the series. He too meets his end during the Infinity Castle arc.
The battle involves Muichiro fighting alongside the Shinazugawa brothers against the Upper Moon Rank One demon, Kokushibo. During the battle, Kokushibo becomes nostalgic about his younger twin brother who did not die despite having the Demon Slayer Mark.
They were rivals and the thought of his brother dying due to old age angered Kokushibo. In that, his body launches multiple slash attacks that cut Muichiro’s lower half of the body. The Hashira continues to attack the demon but to no avail. The Upper Moon Rank One eventually chops Muichiro’s limbs, killing him.
Mitsuri Kanroji (Love Hashira)
Mitsuri Kanroji is a passionate woman who feels emotions deeply. Her combat skills are evident during the Swordsmith Village arc when she fights alongside Tanjiro and Genya, defeating the Upper Moon Rank Four demon, Hantengu.
However, Mitsuri passes away while fighting Muzan Kibutsuji in the Sunrise Countdown arc. She displays extraordinary strength, ripping off the Demon King’s arm.
Despite her power move, Muzan’s attacks tear her flesh and limbs, and she succumbs to death during the battle. She dies in Obanai’s arms, begging him to avoid his death.
Obanai Iguro (Serpent Hashira)
In a shocking turn of events, Iguro passes away after Mitsuri’s tragic death amid the struggle to keep Muzan under the demon slayers’ control until dawn. Most importantly, he dies for the person he did not see eye to eye, Tanjiro.
Obanai hits Muzan multiple times and almost beheads him. However, the Demon King does not give in to the injuries and attacks the demon slayers.
After Obanai regains consciousness, he assists Tanjiro in cornering Muzan. To retaliate, Muzan launches his Shockwave Energy Blast technique and almost bites Tanjiro’s head when Obanai jumps in to take the hit and eventually dies.
Gyomei Himejima (Stone Hashira)
Like the other Hashira, Gyomei Himejima sacrifices his life while helping other demon slayers during the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji.
When the demon slayers are in a critical state, Gyomei helps them while simultaneously holding Muzan until dawn. In the process, he loses his leg and denies medical attention considering the urgency of the situation.
Eventually, the Stone Hashira gives up his life and meets the spirits of his orphan siblings killed by a demon years ago. Gyomei peacefully dies as he imagines being reincarnated as a teacher.
