Dragon Ball Super: Why Are Angels Not Allowed to Fight? Explained

Akira Toriyama has been known for being impeccably thorough when creating characters and races in his series. Few of the many races in Dragon Ball Super have as much mystery surrounding them as angels. These cosmic beings are immortal but can be erased from existence if they violate the Angel Law.

The angels’ primary role is to be personal attendants and mentors to their God of Destruction. Despite being arguably the strongest race in the entire Dragon Ball universe, their imposed limitation provides an interesting conundrum, with many fans beginning to speculate why.

As mentioned earlier, the angel law is a binding contract capable of erasing an angel from existence once broken. The angel law states they must remain neutral, picking neither good nor evil. The rules are ironclad, and a single violation can cause the grand priest, father of all angels, to erase them.

However, it isn’t without its loopholes, like Merus, who chose to join the galactic patrol and fight against evil. He wasn’t immediately erased since he didn’t use his angel powers during fights.

Another instance is Whis rewinding time to restore the Earth, which gives Goku another chance to destroy Frieza. While Whis did help Goku, his reasons were for himself, as he only wanted to save Earth’s delicious cuisine.

In addition, angels don’t participate to help train their God of Destruction as they acquire experience when settling disputes. The angels can violate the law only if it is a direct order from their God of Destruction. This is seen when Beerus asks Whis to save Goku and the others from being killed by Moro.

In short, the angel’s overwhelming power must be kept in check to help keep the universe in perfect harmony. Angels are generally free to act however they want as long as they remain impartial to everything happening around them.
