Blue Eye Samurai Ending Explained: What Happens to Abijah Fowler?

Blue Eye Samurai hit the screens earlier today, and it has already left an ever-lasting impact on the viewers, and naturally so. Medieval Japan is considered the birthplace of samurai, but their widespread recognition today is greatly indebted to cinema. Iconic films, anime and non-anime, significantly contributed to establishing the samurai archetype in the mainstream culture.

The world of anime comes up with titles like Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai. Adding to the list is now an amazing narrative of Blue Eye Samurai.

The story of the anime TV revolves around Mizu, a biracial individual who is exiled to Japan owing to her mixed heritage. Her relentless quests lead her to confront the white men who are responsible for her existence. In her journey, she also meets Heiji Shindo and Abijah Fowler. Hence, starts Mizu’s revenge arc!

Although the story is rich in character dynamics, it adheres to Mizu’s mission for revenge serving as its core. She meets with obstacles in her journey, as all protagonists are expected to do. All in all, the narrative, as the fans seem to explain, is engaging.

Check out the official trailer of the series here:

Mizu is resilient, and her ability to rebound from difficulties is the central point of her quest for vengeance. The fans witness her character growth by the time they reach episode 8, the final episode in the recently released season. Not just Mizu, but even the supporting characters like Ringo and Taigen add depth to the story. While Heiji and Abijah symbolise colonialism and the introduction of Christianity into Japan, Akemi’s growth from being gullible to a formidable figure challenging patriarchy is quite intriguing.

In the story, although Mizu’s focus on revenge and determination to kill Fowler knew no limits, did she actually manage to kill him?

How does Blue Eye Samurai end?

Toward the end, after Mizu almost dies, she recovers at Eiji’s place. Her venture for revenge comes from her personal hatred for her unknown father. The only purpose she has as she grows up through the years is to avenge her misery. Despite this, her commitment to her cause is doubted when she flees from a fight with Fowler to protect herself and Taigen.

She tries to redo her broken blade and works on her self-awareness when she is with Heiji. Her master teaches her the importance of allowing others into her life while maintaining focus and determination.

In the final episodes, the viewers witness Mizu heading toward Edo Castle where she intends on killing Fowler and rescuing Akemi. Ringo stays by her side and assists her. At the castle, Fowler’s alliances within the royal court make their appearance. Unfortunately, Fowler’s advanced weaponry poses a challenge for the defenders of Edo who only have swords and arrows to fight with. Eventually, to the fans’ surprise, Fowler shoots the Shogun.

Thankfully, Mizu intervenes before Fowler manages to harm the princes, and this inevitably leads to a cruel battle. While Fowler seems to have the upper hand, Mizu’s anger assists her and fuels her with determination. Fowler, shockingly, offers to reveal information about other potential fathers. Consequently, Mizu lets him be and spares his life. Her quest to avenge Fowler is seemingly not limited to Fowler. She stays unfazed and it is evident that she wishes to confront the other two possible fathers more than anything.

Even though the series marks the end of season 1 on this note, fans are extremely excited to know how the story will further unfold. The extraordinary action sequences have captured the viewers’ attention. Its 3D-CGI animated content and choreography exhibit the anime’s creative potential. Fans are gushing about how the action scenes are visually distinctive and striking.
