When Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War premieres later this year, it will usher in a more modern era of Bleach, complete with new CGI, new animations, and new characters. According to the creators behind the series’ return, that’s just some of what’s getting them excited.

Speaking in a video Q&A session about the upcoming final arc adaptation, director Tomohisa Taguchi and producer Yoshihiro Tominaga gave their thoughts on the upcoming project, with Tominaga speaking on what fans should be excited about in the upcoming series.
“I’m looking forward to action sequences, the CGI, and Shiro Sagisu’s music. I’d say these three,” said Tominaga. “With director [Tomohisa] Taniguchi here onboard, the action animation will look great. He’s working hard to create action sequences that will top the previous series. So there will be a lot to look forward to. The scenes aren’t done yet, but I’m excited to see the finished product.”
Speaking on what he was personally most excited about, Taniguchi mentioned the litany of new characters set to make their debut in the Bleach anime, as well as tackling how he’s able to animate them in a way that looks even “more awesome” than they do in the black and white pages of the iconic manga.
“Thousand-Year Blood War will introduce many new characters, Taniguchi said. “In the manga, the story is told through black and white still images. But the anime also comes with sound, color, and voices. So I’m really looking forward to seeing how the anime will bring these new characters to life. Even when I’m cutting the storyboards I’m thinking, ‘How can I make these characters from the manga look even more awesome in the anime?’ It’s a process I’m having lots of fun with.”

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War is set to release in October 2022, and comes from animation studio Pierrot and director Tomohisa Taguchi. Bleach anime character designer Masashi Kudo returns for work on this new series as well. In conjunction with the announcement, Viz Media announced that it had secured worldwide rights (excluding Asia) to the upcoming series.
