Not going to write a lot this week because it’s one of the few weeks without a new wide release, but we’re likely to see a bit of shifting in the Top 10 from last week with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 likely to fall behind Disney’s The Muppets, which should take the #1 spot this weekend. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, which opened strong in fifth place despite being in only 1,300 theaters, will be expanding into roughly 600 more theaters, which should allow it to get a bump up to third place over last week’s other family films. Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, starring George Clooney, should also get a bit of a theater bump, which should allow it to push further up into the top 10, likely moving it up into sixth place
There are a bunch of movies getting one-week Oscar runs this week but the one limited release of note is Steve McQueen’s Shame (Fox Searchlight), starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, an NC-17 look at sex addiction in New York City. You can read our review here.
