After completing current doc Machete Maidens Unleashed
Australian filmmaker Mark Hartley (who helmed last year’s excellent documentary Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story Of Ozploitation!) recently chatted with Fangoria and revealed plans to remake Richard Franklin’s cult classic film Patrick after he wraps production on his current documentary Machete Maidens Unleashed.
The original 1978 Patrick (helmed by Franklin who also made Psycho II and Road Games) was about a comatose patient able to move objects via telekinesis with his mind, in an attempt to manipulate his nurse.
Hartley told Fango that he and Justin King (Nature’s Grave) are working on the script now with the intent to shoot it after their current doc Machete Maidens Unleashed wraps.
“Weâre sort of giving it a creepier, Gothic flavor, very much in a similar style to The Orphanage,” says Hartley of how they intend to update the pic. “Thereâs much more of a backstory for Dr. Roget, and Patrick has dream sequences and flashbacks where heâs out of the bed. We donât want to turn Patrick into Freddy Kreuger; we like to think of it as a love story with a body count. The great thing about the original was the fact that hereâs a guy with unlimited powers, but all he wants to do is use them to manipulate the events in that nurseâs life to make her fall in love with him. So weâve kept that central premise and really upped the ante.”
