DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After topped the box office for a third straight weekend, earning an estimated $25.3 million to take its three-week total to $183 million. Overseas, the fourth and final installment has brought in $68.5 million, but it has yet to open in most of Europe and Latin America because of the World Cup which starts Friday, June 11. Shrek Forever After cost about $165 million to make.
Of the four newcomers, Universal’s Get Him to the Greek performed best in second with an estimated $17.4 million from 2,697 theaters. Averaging $6,460 per theater, the Nick Stoller-directed comedy cost $40 million to produce. The Judd Apatow-produced film stars Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Rose Byrne, Sean Combs and Elisabeth Moss.
Lionsgate action comedy Killers, starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, opened in third place to $16.1 million from 2,859 theaters, an average of $5,631. Directed by Robert Luketic, the film was made for about $65 million.
Dropping a spot to fourth and 53.8% in ticket sales, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time added $13.9 million its second weekend for a total of $59.5 million. Overseas, the video game adaptation has earned $156.4 million for a worldwide total of $215.9 million.
New Line/Warner Bros.’ Sex and the City 2 suffered a bigger 59.2% drop in sales its second weekend and slid to the fifth spot with $12.7 million. The $100 million-budgeted sequel has collected $74.4 million domestically so far. Internationally, the film took first place with $45 million and has earned $90 million to push its worldwide total to $164.4 million.
20th Century Fox’s Marmaduke, an adaptation of the comic strip, debuted in sixth place with $11.3 million from 3,213 theaters. The film was made for about $50 million.
Paramount and Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2 dropped to the seventh spot and brought in another $7.8 million its fifth weekend for a domestic total of $291.3 million. Its overseas sum has reached $288.4 million for a worldwide total of $579.7 million.
Warner Bros. Pictures sci-fi thriller Splice opened in eighth place with $7.5 million from 2,450 theaters. The $30 million film stars Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley and Delphine Chaneac.
Universal’s Robin Hood earned $5.1 million in ninth for a four-week total of $94.3 million, while its foreign gross has reached $172 million. That’s a worldwide total of $266.3 million.
