Although Joel McHale will maybe probably maybe be back as Jeff Winger should “Community” return for a seventh season on Yahoo! Screen, Deadline is today reporting that the actor has joined the cast of FOX’s six-episode revival of “The X-Files.” According to the outlet, McHale will play the recurring role of Tad O’Malley, said to be, “the anchor of a popular conservative internet news network who becomes an unlikely ally for Fox Mulder.”
McHale joins stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, returning as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively. Mitch Pileggi also confirmed that he’ll be back as Walter Skinner. Previous reports indicate that William B. Davis’ Cigarette-Smoking Man and Annabeth Gish and Robert Patrick’s special agents Monica Reyes and John Doggett are also set to return, but this hasn’t been confirmed.
“The X-Files” originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.
