Here’s Argylle‘s ending explained featuring spoilers about all the plot twists in the film. Dive into our breakdown and learn the identity of the real Argylle in the film.
Argylle’s Ending Explained
Argylle ended with Elly and Aidan bringing the Division and its agents down. Following that, Elly also launched her fifth book to end her novel series.
Through the course of the film, Argylle novelist Elly Conway’s real identity is revealed to be the CIA’s Agent Rachel ‘R’ Kylle. Being brainwashed after an accident, she became a writer and reiterated her own past life story as the story of her spy character, Aubrey Argylle.
However, the final act of the movie revealed that Elly/Rachel also belonged to the CIA’s nefarious rogue organization, The Division. But we later find out that along with Aidan, Rachel was loyal to the CIA. She wanted to get out of The Division and expose its covert operations and agents. So, she had initially killed Bakunin in hopes of keeping the Master Key with the list of all Division agents’ names away from Director Ritter.
When Ritter and Ruth finally had the Master Key, their next goal was to find the ex-Deputy CIA director, Alfred ‘Alfie’ Solomon through Aidan and kill him. Rachel used the opportunity to her advantage. She shoots Aidan in front of the Division heads and gains their trust.
But it was a ploy as she had shot Aidan through the vascular corridor beside his heart. It allowed the bullet to pass through his body without causing any damage to his heart or any other organs. He survived and teamed up with Rachel to take down all of the Division’s agents in two stunning action sequences.
While trying to send the Master Key to Solomon, Director Ritter caught up to them. But he was taken down by Alphie the cat. Following that, the two agents access a satellite to transfer the Master Key to Solomon. But they’re interrupted by Ruth, who had reprogrammed Rachel similar to how Hydra brainwashed Bucky with trigger words in the MCU.
As Rachel tried to kill Aidan, the latter surrendered because he loved her. It was similar to how Captain America surrendered against Bucky. But here, they were saved by another loyal CIA agent Keira. She was initially believed to be dead. But she had managed to survive her gunshot wound in the same way that Aidan did, as mentioned above. She was the fan who gave Rachel the idea to use the same shooting tactic on Aidan.
As soon as Keira took down Ruth, Rachel snapped out of her control. The Master Key was successfully transferred to Solomon L. Jackson and the Division was destroyed. After this complicated but happy ending, Rachel continued living with her current alias of Elly Conway. The movie ended with her launching the final Argylle book. But upon its launch, she came across the real Agent Argylle sitting in the audience amongst her fans.
Who is the real Agent Argylle?
Besides a fictional character, the film ended by revealing a real Kingsman spy named Aubrey Argylle, who was also played by Henry Cavill.
Through the course of the film, we were made to believe that Henry Cavill’s Argylle was a fictional character that Elly Conway inspired by her own past identity of ‘R. Kylle.’ It’s assumed that she imagined Agent Argylle because of her past. But the ending revealed that this isn’t the case.
Outside the Division and the CIA, there exists a real agent named Aubrey Argylle who has a mullet and is also played by Henry Cavill. The post-credits scene revealed that this agent belonged to the Kingsman organization from director Matthew Vaugh’s past films.
As teased by Vaughn in the past, a future sequel will explain the connection between Elly Conway and the real Argylle. We also expect to find out why Elly’s subconscious made her see the real Argylle’s face even though her character was inspired by her own life events.
